Tech Packs and Fabric Sourcing: A Due-Diligence Guide

Tech packs and fabric sourcing are frequent sources of disagreement in apparel-development projects because each depends on inputs, assumptions, and outside vendors. Clear acceptance standards reduce the chance that the client and consultant use different definitions of “complete.”

Define the source of measurements

A tech pack may rely on measurements created by the consultant, a pattern maker, a sample maker, or the client. The agreement should identify the source, version, approval date, and person responsible for checking consistency. If another vendor supplies measurements, define whether the consultant merely records them or must validate them.

Specify every tech-pack component

  • Technical flats showing front, back, and construction views
  • Point-of-measure diagrams and measurement tables
  • Materials, trims, labels, hardware, and packaging
  • Stitching, seam, finishing, and construction instructions
  • Colorways, artwork placement, and print specifications
  • Size grading rules where included
  • Revision history and approval status

Define what sourcing delivers

A supplier name is not the same as a viable production source. A sourcing deliverable should state whether the supplier has confirmed composition, weight, finish, color availability, minimums, sample availability, price, lead time, geographic origin, and willingness to work with the client.

Plan for supplier rejection or change

Suppliers can decline small orders, discontinue materials, change minimums, or refuse particular clients. The contract should say how many alternatives will be researched, whether substitutions require approval, and when additional sourcing fees apply.

Use milestone acceptance

Review technical work before moving into sampling or production. Record defects as specific mismatches with the agreed checklist. Tie payment milestones to delivered and reviewable files, not only elapsed time.

An independent technical designer or production specialist can review disputed files. This guide provides general education and does not determine the quality of any specific V.Mora deliverable.
